For this tutorial you
will need: PS or PSE I've done this tutorial in both programs, in PS CS2 and PSE 5. I believe it can be done in most versions. You may have to look around for the commands but they are there. Filters and materials needed Filters needed Filters Unlimited 2 Simple Filters>Top Left Mirror Xero>Porcelain The scrap kit made by Melissa of Sentimental Style when she was still Heartfelt Scraps (in the supplies folder): http://sentimentalstyle.blogspot.com/ Supplies in zip file here http://www.ellies-treasures.com/files/tuts/winterscrap-ps-pi-supplies.zip IMPORTANT NOTE RE SCRAP KIT The kit consists of layers, 1 per element. To copy each one, make sure you are on that layer, control-A to select, and then Control-C to copy. Over to your working canvas, control-V to paste onto canvas (automatically makes it's own layer) If there is more than one element in a layer, control-A to select, Control-C to copy the layer, In PSE: File>New>Image from Clipboard In PS: after copying, File>New>Preset:Clipboard. In the new canvas, Copy-V to paste. Now use your selection tool to select around the one you want and copy (Control-C) then paste (Control-V) into your working canvas. I am assuming you know the basics of Photoshop/Photoshop Elements and where the tools can be located. |
1. Pick a paper from the HS Scrap Kit_022 (I used the second one from the bottom) hit control-A to select all, PSE: go to File>New>Image from clipboard PS: after copying, go to File>New and in the window that opens, from clipboard should be checked, if not check it, then control-V to paste what's in the clipboard. This will be your working canvas. You can use either one of the other 2 papers as well (layers 1 or 3) New layer (icon is at the bottom of the layer palette in PS, and the top of the layer palette in PSE) Selection>select all Copy "1016 scenery 34" and paste into selection. This may not work the way you expected in PS/PSE. If you're new to PS/PSE you may expect it to fill the selection, but it doesn't. It's pastes into the selection but doesn't fill it. PSE: Go to Image>Resize>Scale PS: Edit>Transform>Scale Clicking and hold down the bounding boxes and pull out on both sides and a bit at top and bottom (using the little boxes at the sides, top and bottom) so it looks similar to my example. Click on the checkmark to finish it (bottom of canvas in PSE, in toolbar on the right in PS) In the layer palette, put the blend mode on luminosity and the opacity on 44%
2. Copy (pick the layer, click on Control-A to select all, Control-C to copy, the ribbon and lace layer in the scrap kit and create new image from it (see here in the introduction to this tutorial if you don't know how) Now you can select the ribbon with your selection tool and copy After copying the ribbon, paste on your working canvas Place it at the bottom, past the edge of the canvas, as shown, making sure you can see only the top line of stitching If you have snap to guides enabled, you will need to use your down cursor arrow to get it past the edge. Apply Drop Shadow PSE: in the styles palette, drop shadow, double click on low, then go to Layer>Layer Style>Style settings and change it as follows: angle -45, size 5, distance 1, opacity 100% color #5980ba (a medium blue) PS: go to Layer>Layer Style>Drop Shadow and set as follows: Color #5980ba (a medium blue), Angle -45, opacity 100, use global light unchecked, 1-0-5 Leave all else at default. Layer>Duplicate Move the new ribbon layer to the top of the canvas, again, making sure only the one row of stitching shows.
| 3. Copy the lace and paste as new layer
and place it near the top as shown in the example below Drop Shadow PSE: same as in step 2- in the styles palette, drop shadow, double click on low, then go to Layer>Layer Style>Style settings and change it as follows: angle -45, size 5, distance 1, opacity 100% color #5980ba (a medium blue) PS: go to Layer>Layer Style>Drop Shadow and set as follows: Color #5980ba (a medium blue), Angle -45, opacity 75, use global light unchecked, 2-0-5 (same as step 2 but opacity and distance changed, you will have to put the color in each time but the settings stay as last time used) Leave all else at default. Duplicate layer, PSE: Image>Rotate>Flip layer vertically PS: Edit>Transform>Flip Vertical Move into place in a corresponding spot near the bottom (see example) |
4. In the scrap kit, copy the photo frames and paste as new image. Cut out the slanted one, copy it and paste as new layer on your canvas PSE: Go to Image>Resize>Scale PS: Edit>Transform>Scale Clicking and hold down the bounding boxes as in step 1, pull it top and bottom to the edges of the ribbon, and on the sides almost to the edges. See example. Click on the checkmark to finish. Apply same drop shadow as in previous step, with the blue color #5980ba, PSE: same as step 3 but change the distance to 2 PS: same as step 3 but change opacity back to 100 and the distance will be at 2.
5. Copy the photo mounts and paste as new image Click with your magic wand in the white part, tolerance on 10 Leave it selected
6. Open 1147 blue eyes, resize it to 275 X 211 pixels (right click on title bar of canvas and click on Image Size) Copy the baby and return to your photo mounts. Paste into selection. PSE: Go to Image>Resize>Scale PS: Edit>Transform>Scale Click and hold down the bounding boxes as in step 1, and pull the top and bottom a bit till it's like my example. It will still look good and just like the tag example. As you may recall, PS and PSE do not resize the image to fit into selection, thus you have to resize manually. Leave it selected.
7. Filter>Xero>Porcelain set at 149-128-128-0-0-255 Deselect PSE: Layer styles palette>Drop Shadow>Soft Edge Now go to Layers>Layer Styles>Style settings and change to 120-3-5-75, blue color #5980ba as before PS: go to Layer>Layer Style>Drop Shadow and set as follows: Color #5980ba (a medium blue), Angle 120, opacity 75, use global light unchecked, 5-0-3 PSE: Image>Rotate>Flip Layer horizontal PS: Edit>Transform>Flip Horizontal copy and paste on your working canvas
8. Copy the white snowflakes and paste as a new image. Resize to 60% bicubic. Select the top one with the selection tool and copy it, paste it on the canvas and place it as shown at the top left of the mounts PSE: Layer styles palette>Drop Shadow>Low Now go to Layers>Layer Styles>Style settings and change to Angle -45, 1-2-100 - color as before (#5980ba, the blue), PS: go to Layer>Layer Style>Drop Shadow and set as follows: Color #5980ba (a medium blue), Angle -45, opacity 100, use global light unchecked, 2-0-1 Keep selected PSE: Go to Layers>Duplicate, then Image>Rotate>Flip layer horizontal, then flip image vertical PS: Edit>Transform>Flip horizontal then Flip Vertical Place in the bottom right as shown.
9. From the scrap kit, copy the buttons layer and paste as new image. Select one of the small buttons at the top (I used the darker one on the right) and copy it, then put it right in the middle of a snowflake. PSE: Layer styles palette>Drop Shadow>Low, thengo to Layers>Layer Styles>Style settings and change to Angle 128, 1-2-100 - color as before (the blue), same as step 8 except for the angle) PS: go to Layer>Layer Style>Drop Shadow and set as follows: Color #5980ba (a medium blue), Angle 128, opacity 100, use global light unchecked, 2-0-1 (same as step 8 except for the angle) Duplicate layer then flip horizontally, then vertically. In PSE in the menu item Image>Rotate, in PS in the menu item Edit>Transform Layers>Merge visible
10. Filter>Filters Unlimited 2>edges square - square edge 17 Right click on canvas title bar and Image Size - 85% bicubic Then back to canvas title bar, canvas size, and change height and width back to 500X500, relative unchecked, nothing else changed. Your tag will now be in the middle with a large transparent area around it Click on the layer to select the layer. Click once again holding the control key and it will deselect the layer. Still holding down the control key, click on the layer again, and it will select the tag in the middle of the canvas, not the whole layer. (you won't see any difference yet) PSE: go to Edit>Stroke (Outline) Selection, PS: Edit>Stroke in the next window pick 1, check "outside" and your blue color #5980ba It may be a bit hard to see in this reduced image, but there's a thin blue line outlining the tag now. Not the canvas but the tag.
11. Open the lace frame-not out of the scrap kit Resize 80% bicubic Copy and paste as new layer on your tag. It should paste right in the middle Layers>Arrange>send to bottom, or just pull it down in the layer palette Adjust the position so that the tag is right in the exact middle of it. If all is in place properly, right click in layer palette and merge visible.
12. Copy the paper clip (not from the scrap kit) - paste PSE: Image>Rotate>Free rotate layer PS: Edit>Transform>Rotate Hover over one of the corners and you will see a two headed curved arrow. Click on that and rotate the clip about 45 degrees as shown below Move it into place at the upper left. PSE: Layer style>drop shadow>Low, Layers>Layer styles>Style settings Angle 128 2-4-100 color #3c5780 (a darker blue), PS: go to Layer>Layer Style>Drop Shadow and set as follows: Color #3c5780 (a darker blue), Angle 120, opacity 100, use global light unchecked, 4-0-1 Duplicate layer then flip horizontally, then vertically. In PSE it's in the menu item Image>Rotate Layer, in PS it's in the menu item Edit>Transform>Rotate Filter>Simple>top left mirror (this puts the paper clip into all the corners - like magic!) If they don't go into the right places, they can't be moved as it's all one layer. In that case, instead, undo the filter, then duplicate layer, PSE: Image>Rotate>Flip layer horizontal - PS: Edit>Transform>Flip Horizontal, Put it in the top right corner, duplicate, flip layer vertical and put in bottom right corner, then duplicate and flip layer horizontal, put in bottom left corner.
13. Copy the tags from the scrap kit and paste as new image. Image>Resize 80% bicubic, Now resize 80% again. This will not give the same size as resizing 60% to do it all at once. Believe me, I tried it. LOL Select the one you want. I used the darker bow one on the left. select, copy and paste on your tag. Move into place as shown Apply a drop shadow, PSE: pick soft edge in the palette, then Layers>Layer styles>Style settings angle 128, 2-2-100 #3c5780 PS: go to Layer>Layer Style>Drop Shadow and set as follows: Color #3c5780 (a darker blue), Angle 128, opacity 100, use global light unchecked, 2-0-2 Move it into place
14. Adding the text. Pick the font Snowcap size 10, foreground color on #557cb4 Type your text. I typed "Winter". Click on the little arrow to finish (in the text toolbar) Now with your magic wand, left at add to selection, click on each letter to select the whole word Once all selected, go to Selection>Modify>Expand by 2 pixels Create a new layer and drag underneath the text layer. Fill this new layer with white. Now apply a drop shadow. PSE: In the layer styles palette, double click on hard edge Go to Layer>Layer styles>Style settings and change the color to the blue #557cb4 used for the text. Change the settings to 0-1-100 angle 128 PS: go to Layer>Layer Style>Drop Shadow and set as follows: Color blue #557cb4 used for the text. Angle 120, opacity 100, use global light unchecked, 1-0-0 In the layer palette, highlight both the text layer and the white layer (hold the control key down and click on each to select), PSE: right click and merge layers. PS: In the white layer, right click and merge the layers. You must be in the white layer or you won't see merge layers command. Adjust the position if needed.
15. Using the Snowcap font again, size depending on your text (I have mine on 8), type text on the tag. I typed XXX using small x's. PSE: Repeat the steps above but set the magic wand at tolerance of 40. Magnify the tag greatly so you can make sure all the letters are picked all the way around. PS: just leave the magic wand tolerance at 0, it seems to select the letters better than PSE You won't be able to select the small line at the top of the snow on the letter but you can select everything else. Now go to Selection>Modify and expand by 1 this time. Create new layer, pull it under the text layer in the layer palette, and fill with white. Keep selected. In the layer palette, double click on the hard edge shadow. PSE: Go to Layer>Layer styles>Style settings and change the color to the blue #557cb4 Change the settings to 0-1-100 angle 128 PS: go to Layer>Layer Style>Drop Shadow and set as follows: Color blue #557cb4 used for the text. Angle 120, opacity 100, use global light unchecked, 1-0-0 In the layer palette, highlight both the text layer and the white layer, PSE: right click and merge layers. PS: In the white layer, right click and merge the layers. You must be in the white layer or you won't see the merge layers command. Move it to the right spot. Now type whatever text you want, such as your name, in the spot below the triple x's. Use the same method as above, the font size depending on the size of your text. I used 8 as mine is a short name. Merge visible Watermark and save as a gif if you want to retain the transparency or as a jpg if you want to save it on a background or a color. To save as a gif, go to File>Save for Web. In the info section, top right, check transparency, in the matte field, either pick the color it will go on (for the best result) or click on none. If you pick none, it won't be as clear around the edges when used. When I picked none and saved this gif, it showed a bit of fuzzy blue around the edges.
