For this tutorial you
will need:
or

I've done this tutorial in PS CS3 and PSE 5
I believe it can be done in most versions.
You may have to look around for the commands but it's likely
they are there.

Filters and materials needed
FM Tile Tools / Blend
Emboss, free
here
(it's a trial version but blend emboss is one that keeps
working)
Bordermania, available free

Please
leave the filenames and previews of the tubes intact.
The creators have worked hard to make them.

From Marian
The tubes which I have used are from Monique42 and several scrap
tubes. *
Have respect for the tubers and leave them in their original state.
Important!!! Please read carefully!!!
* The scrap tubes used in this tutorial are bought by me
personally. You may use these scrap tubes
for this tutorial, and for your personal use. You may not offer
these tubes for sale, trade, sharing,
your own tutorials, or commercial purposes. Read carefully the
conditions and terms of the scrap designers,
otherwise I will have to stop writing scrap tutorials!!! Thanks
for your cooperation.

I am assuming you know the basics of Photoshop-Photoshop
Elements and where
the tools can be located.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are using PSE 5, there is no
longer the ability to turn off Global Light.
If you change the angle of the shadow for one layer, it affects
all layers. So use the drop shadow
as described in step 4 and you have no choice but to leave the
angle as in the fourth step that way.
You can adjust the other settings, you just can's change the
angle without affecting all the layers.
For versions other than 5, you can apply the Low setting and
then Layer>Layer styles>
Style settings and adjust the shadow and angle to the settings
described for Photoshop |
Here are some arrows and bars you can drag and drop
where you need to mark or underline where you are. .
Just left click and drag to where you want it then let go.
They will stay where you put them until you close your browser.

When you are copying tubes, make sure you are in the layer that has the picture and not the watermarks layer, etc
When placing the elements, if you can't grab them with the mouse as they are so small, just click on the move tool,
make sure your cursor is somewhere inside of the canvas and use your arrow keys to move it.
When copying and pasting, do not forget to Control-A to select all and then Control-C to copy and Control-V to paste. You can use the commands in the Edit menu as well. My point here is to not forget to select all before you copy.
I like to open all my of
tubes at the beginning and then close
them after I use them to keep my work area clean and tidy.
The only tube you will need twice is "Achtergrond_04" |
Step 1
Open a transparent canvas of 660x 500 pixels.
Control-A to select all |
Step 2
Open "Achtergrond_01" (background 1-beige floral), copy
(Control-A to select and control-C to copy) and in your working canvas Edit>Paste into
Select - deselect
 |
Step 3
Open "Achtergrond_02" (blue paisley), copy and paste as a new layer (Control-V).
Move it to the left, see my example.
 |
Step 4
Open the tube, "Lace" copy and paste into working canvas, move it into place
along the right edge of achtergrond 02 as shown then pull this layer in your
layer palette under the Achtergrond_02 layer (just left click on the layer and drag it down)
Adjust so it's in the same spot as shown below.
Photoshop (Photoshop Elements is below)
Layer>Layer Style>Drop shadow
Angle 175
Distance 2, spread 10, size 4, opacity 80,
Color very dark grey (#575A5D) - I prefer this to black for more realistic shadows
Anti-aliased checked
Use Global Light unchecked (you always want to uncheck this. With it on, if you change the angle of the shadow of one layer, they will all change because that's what global light was meant to do)
All else at default

Photoshop Elements
PSE: with that layer highlighted, go to the Effects Palette, pick Layer Styles>Drop Shadows. Double click on the Low to apply that shadow to your lace. Now go to Layer>Layer Style>Style settings
Now use the same settings as in Photoshop drop shadow above.

Select your top layer in the layer palette (it will be layer 2 as you dragged layer 3 below it). |
Step 5
Open "Achtergrond_03" (brown torn paper), copy and paste into working canvas.
Move it to the left, see my example.
Same drop shadow as in step 4
Photoshop
You will need to change the settings again. The only thing that will remain the same is
the angle, but that will change as soon as you uncheck global light again.
Leave this shadow at black. With the darker colors here the dark grey does not show up well enough.
Angle 175
Distance 2, spread 10, size 4, opacity 80,
Anti-aliased checked
Use Global Light unchecked
All else at default
Photoshop Elements
Use the same step as step 4, double click on low, and then go to Layers>Layer Styles>Style Settings
and the settings should still be there as in the last step except the color, which you will leave on black.

 |
Step 6
Open your tube, "band" copy and paste into working canvas.
Move it in place as shown

Photoshop
Same drop shadow as before except for angle change
Angle 90, color black
Distance 2, spread 10, size 2, opacity 80,
Anti-aliased checked
Use Global Light unchecked

Leave this layer styles window open
Click on Bevel and Emboss
In the Bevel and Emboss window, pick Inner Bevel
smooth, 100%, down, 0-0-angle 90, use global light unchecked, alt of 30, default contour,
anti-aliased checked, screen and multiply, both set at 75%

Now click the box "Contour"
Leave the contour box at default of 50%

Your sidebox should have these things checked

Photoshop Elements
Just double click on the Low preset in the Drop Shadow style palette

 |
Step 7
Open "Achtergrond_04", copy and paste into working canvas. It will paste into the middle, leave it there.
Don't close this file (achterground 04). You'll need it again. |
Step 8
Open your tube, "frame", copy and paste into working canvas. Move it into position along the lace edge
and move the background 4 layer along with it so it's behind and not showing around the edges of the frame
(to move both at the same time, highlight one in the layer palette
and hold down the control key when you select the other one).
Make sure you are in the frame layer, apply a drop shadow
Photoshop
Layer>Layer Style>Drop Shadow, black, opacity 65%, angle -145, use
global light not checked, 2-10-15, anti-aliased checked. The rest at default

Photoshop Elements
Double click on the outline preset in the shadow palette, then go to Layers>Layer Style>
Style settings and, not touching the angle, change the other settings to 7-7-75 and
change the color back to the dark grey #575A5D

 |
Step 9
Open your tube "Tubed_by_monique 42_2513" (the children),
Right click on the title bar, pick Image size and resize it to 70% bicubic
copy and paste into working canvas, move it into the frame,
so that the little girl comes against the lower inside edge of the frame and almost t
o the right inside edge, and the suitcase of the little boy lies just outside the frame.
It should be almost in the right place when you paste it, just move it up a bit.
Layers - Duplicate
Filter-FM Tile tools - Blend Emboss at default settings
-1, -1, .250, 64, and the bottom 3 at 0.938

 |
Step 10
Open your tube "Haakje" (hook), copy and paste into working canvas, moves this to the top left
so that the bracket is just at the top edge and just inside the golden frayed part.
Photoshop
Layer Style>Bevel and Emboss, pick emboss, smooth, 32, down, 5, 0, angle 120,
use global light not checked, default contour, anti-aliased checked, rest at default

Photoshop Elements
in style palette, pick layer styles>Bevels and double click on Simple Sharp Inner

 |
Step 11
Open your tube "label" - copy and paste into working canvas,
move it so that the round part of the bracket falls exactly in the little hole of the label.
Photoshop
Drop shadow: mode hard light, black, 20%, angle 0, use global light not checked,
1-100-1, anti-aliased checked, rest at default

Don't click ok yet
click on Bevel and Emboss, pick Stroke emboss, smooth, 100%, up, 5, 0, angle -45,
altitude 26, use global light not checked, anti-aliased checked, rest at default

Photoshop Elements
In drop shadow in style palette, double click on soft edge, then Layer>Layer Styles>
Style settings, and don't touch the angle, but change the settings to 15-5-100

 |
Step 12
Open your tube "labelknopp" (wood bead), copy and paste as a
new layer, move it onto your label right on top of the hole. |
Step 13
Open your tube, "strik" (bow), copy and paste as a new layer,
move it to to the right on your frame, see my example.
Adjust - sharpen - unsharp mask amount 64, radius 1, threshold 4

Photoshop
Layer Style>drop shadow, settings:
multiply, black, 30%, angle 90,
global light not checked,
1-100-1, anti-aliased checked, rest at default

Photoshop Elements
Double click on preset low for drop shadow.
Layer>Layer styles>Style Settings>
leave angle alone, change the rest to 15-1-100, leave the color
at black

 |
Step 14
Open your tube, "Deco_Element" - copy and paste as a new layer,
move it to the right, above the lace, as shown.
Photoshop
Layer style: Bevel and Emboss, pick outer bevel, smooth, 100%,
up, 0, 0, angle 120,
use global light not checked, 30,
anti-aliased checked, rest at default

Don't click ok yet.
Click on Drop Shadow, multiply, black, 50%, angle 120, global
light
not checked, 1, 0, 1, anti-aliased checked, rest at
default

Click ok.
Photoshop Elements
Just double click on the Low preset in the drop shadows

 |
Step 15
Open your tube, "Schild" (sign), copy and paste as a new layer,
place it as shown.
Photoshop
Layer Styles>Drop Shadow, multiply, dark grey #575A5D, 40%,
angle 0,
global light not checked, 0, 100, 2, anti-aliased
checked, rest at default

Click ok.
Photoshop Elements
double click on the Outline drop shadow, Layers>Layer
styles>
Style settings, leave angle alone, change the rest to 5-0-67

 |
Step 16
Open your tube, "nagels" (nails), copy and paste as a new layer,
move these so that they fall exactly in the openings of the
sign.
 |
Step 17
Make sure all of the tubes are place where you want them.
At
this point I usually save as a psd file to retain the layers for
backup purposes.
Right click in layer palette and flatten image. You can close
all of the tubes except for
"achterground_04" and "text" (if
you're using my text). Don't close your working canvas! LOL |
Step 18
Right click on canvas title bar, click on canvas size, 30
pixels, white, relative checked, don't click
on any of the
arrows (you wanted 15 pixels all around so you made the
expansion 30 pixels.
You always pick twice the amount you want
to get it all around).

Select with the magic wand, tolerance on 0. (I am using PS CS3
and couldn't find the magic wand.
By default, the quick
selection tool is showing but click on the little arrow
in the
bottom corner of the tool and you'll see the magic wand)
Open the "achtergrond_04" tube, delete the watermark layer,
go
to Edit>Define pattern, give it a name and ok.

Back to your working canvas, go to Edit>Fill (in PSE it's
Edit>Fill Selection).
In the next window
pick pattern and find the one you just defined. Leave all at
default and click ok.

With it still selected, right click in layer palette and
duplicate layer. |
Step 19
Keep it selected
Filter>Bordermania>frame #2, set at 6-9-110-130, notch corners
checked, bevel not checked.

 |
Step 20
With a nice handwriting font and your text tool, type the words
"Life Journey" on the label.
I used the font SlashHmkBold, size
15 and the color #382F20 which is a faded black.
I typed each
word separately on two separate layers so I could move them
around independently of each other.
I've provided the text in psd format if you want to use mine.
PSDs retain the separate
layers on transparent background.

 |
Step 21
Reduce size if you want to, using Bicubic Sharper as the
setting.
If needed, go to Adjust>Sharpness>Unsharp Mask at the
settings 1-64-4
Watermark and save. Don't forget to optimize. I usually optimize
at about 8 which is High. |

Webpage Design Information
This lace background was made in PhotoImpact with a tutorial by Deb
DeHaven
Sadly, she passed away but her tutorials just
came back online, thanks to PIRCNet.
You can find the tutorial
here.
The font I used for the text on the buttons is
BrockScript
The font I used for the "Life's Journey" tutorial header is
SlashHmkBold.
Click on the font name to download the font.
I use PhotoImpact to make all of my headers due to the amazing
3D text it has and the wonderful presets available free online
Most of the presets I use are either the ones that come with PhotoImpact,
usually the Gel ones,
or from Deb's PI Tutorials and More (see below) or
Carol Oyl's
site
This is the address to Deb's old pages
http://www.fortunecity.com/skyscraper/millenit/1716/pitutorials/objects/presets/presets1.html
I can't find any links to her new pages but
the presets are still on this page for download.

Great Beginnings
page.
