For this tutorial you
will need:
Ulead PhotoImpact - available for purchase or trial
here
I've done this tutorial in PI XL
and PI 12
I believe it can be done in most versions.
You may have to look around for the commands but it's likely
they are there.

Filters and materials needed
Mehdi
- Sorting Tiles, available free
here
FM Tile tools - Blend Emboss, free
here
(it's a trial version but blend emboss is one that keeps
working)
Xero - Porcelain, free
here
Flaming pear - Transline, free
here, look for Free Plugins halfway down the page
Penta.com - VTR 2 and Color Dot, free
here
Graphic plus - Cross Shadow, free
here
Supplies
in zip file
here
The
material has been prepared so that you can open it with
different versions of the program.

I am assuming you know the basics of PhotoImpact and where
the tools can be located. |
1. Open new canvas 640X480

You can either use the gradient canvas I've supplied in the materials,
already the correct size, or you can create your own.
Follow these instructions to create your own:
Edit>Fill>Gradient>Fill Type: arrow from lower left to upper right (4th from left)

Magic Gradient. Click on color strip next to it. In next window click on Mode 1 then click on Edit
Pick 065 (we need 4 color blocks and that one has it, no need to add one, though you can if you want)

To change the color of the color blocks, right click on the box and click on change color.

Put the dark brown #4a1b02 in the bottom block and move it to 235
(the number will appear when you left click on the color box.
Put this color #CA9B7F in the color box on the middle left, position it at 358
In the middle right box, put color #d0a185 and move it to position 135
In the box that's left, put in the dark brown color #4a1b02 again.
Move that to position 11 (almost right at the same spot as the left box).
Click Add to add it to your gradients to choose from. It will be in the last place in the thumbnails.
Click ok, then ok again then ok again to get out of last window.
Your canvas will be filled with the gradient and it should look like this.

|
2. Go to Effect (in PI 12 it's Photo)>Blur>Gaussian blur set at 20.

It should look like this now.
 |
3. Go to Effect>Mehdi>Sorting tiles set at Block Range 0-50, Block 50, Mosaic checked

 |
4. Open the tube "ldesignz dreamerbyfrixin". Copy it (control-c) and paste as a new layer (Control-V)
onto your gradient canvas. Go to Effect (in PI 12 it's Photo)>Blur>Motion Blur,
in first window, click on Options and in next window set angle to 315 and offset to 80.
Pick Camera Shake setting. Check the Expand Outside Object box. Click ok and ok.

Pull the canvas window out at the bottom right corner past the
edges of the canvas, to make it bigger to work with.
Click on your transform tool (or just click Q), make sure in the toolbar that it's set at resize
(1st icon on left in PI XL, in PI 12 click on the drop down arrow on the first icon and pick resize)

and pull the layer out to cover the complete canvas, using the bounding boxes.

You will probably only have to pull out the left and right side, it should already
pretty well be in the right spot top and bottom.

In the layer palette, turn the opacity down to 45.

 |
5. Open your tube "_ Aimelle_sepia beauty". Copy (control-C) and paste
(control-V) as an object (this will make itself a new layer).
Click on the transform tool and in the toolbar click on Flip Horizontal icon. This will mirror it.

Now move it into place at the right edge, click on the transform tool
and pull it slightly at top and bottom to make sure it fits exactly.
Go to Effect>Illumination>Warm and pick the orange one middle right (In PI 12 it's Effect>Lighting>Warm)

Now go to Hue & Saturation, leave it on Master, and change the saturation to -48
and the lightness to 19. Leave hue at 0.

Go to Effect>FM Tile Tools>Blend Emboss at default settings

.
Select none |
6. Open the tube "ldesignz dreamerbyfrixin" again.
Copy it (control-c) and paste as a new layer (Control-V) onto your gradient canvas.
Click on the transform tool and in the toolbar click on Flip Horizontal icon.
This will mirror it. Now move it into place at the left edge as shown.

Go to Effect>FM Tile Tools>Blend Emboss at default settings.
Go to Effect>Photographic>Sunlight (in PI 12 it's Photo>Enhance>Sunlight) and use these settings
23-21-68-0-cool-warm at -15, blue sky, strength 50, direction 0

Before and after using the sunlight filter
 |
7. Open the tube "MarieL_2006_10Octobre_smoke02t".
Copy (control-c) and over to your canvas you're working on, Paste (control-V) into the picture as the top layer,
Then to to Format>Image Size and, making sure selected object is picked, resize to 640 wide.

It will then be the right size and in the right spot, you should not have to move it.
Now, in the layer palette, change the blend mode to Multiply.
Reduce opacity in layer palette to 69.

Right click and deselect all |
8. Open the tube "Marif_2006_octobre_misted_fleurs093".
Click on the transform tool and in the toolbar click on Flip Horizontal icon.
This will mirror it. Copy (control-c) and paste as new layer (control-V) into your tag.

Now, in the layer palette, change the blend mode to Luminosity only.
Reduce opacity in layer palette to 35
 |
9. Open the tube "Marif_2006_octobre_misted_decor078",
copy (control-C) and paste as new layer (control-V) in the tag canvas.
With your transform tool (click on Q) set at resize, pull the top and bottom
edges till they are right at top edge and bottom edge. The drops will now be an oval shape.
(In PI 12, hold down the shift key while pulling down or the left
and right sides will resize as well. You want the drops to be oval)
Now move the entire layer to the right edge until only some of the droplets are showing, as shown in the sample here.

Now, in the layer palette, change the blend mode to Overlay. Reduce opacity in layer palette to 40.
 |
10. Right click, merge all.
Go to Effect>Xero>Porcelain, change the bottom 3 lines (red-green-blue) to 0.

It should look like this now

Duplicate this canvas and minimize if you are making the wide border.
Now we will add either a narrow edge or a wide one. Your choice.
Narrow edge is just below, wide edge is below that, or click here. |
NARROW EDGE BORDER
Method 1 Method 2
 |

Selection-All
Selection>Modify>Expand/Shrink-Shrink 10, box

Selection>Invert
Adjust (In PI 12 it's Photo)>Blur>Gaussian Blur at 20
Effect>Flaming Pear>Transline
You can pick method 1 or method 2 for the next step.
Method 1:
Right click>Shadow: pick 1st icon on left. X and Y at 3, transparency 0, shadow size 100, soft edge 5

Right click>Split Shadow
Now repeat but with 4th icon from left picked, as shown in screenshot above.

Now you can add the text. |
WIDE EDGE BORDER
 |
1. Duplicate canvas and minimize duplicate

Effect>Penta.com - Color Dot, default settings

Keep selected |
3. Duplicate layer.
Fill the new layer with color #2e1709 (the dark brown)
Effect>Graphic Plus>Cross shadow>default settings

Lower layer opacity to 72

Right click, merge all |
4. Repeat step 1
Format>Expand Canvas>1 pixel #2e1709

| ADDING TEXT |
The original creator used the font Carattere but it's not shareware so I found
one that is very similar and I can share, called ElegeionScript.
Click on your type tool, change color to a light grey, 3D Object. Size 65-70, Type your text.
Easy Palette>Material Gallery>Gel, pick G19, right click on it,

Modify and Apply, change bevel size to 4.

Go to Material Attribute Gallery>Color, double click on the black and then on the chocolate brown.
Go to Format (PI 12 Photo>Light)>Brightness and Contrast.
Make sure your text is the way you want it before the Brightness
and Contrast step, as it will not be editable after that.
Set the brightness to -40, the contrast to -6 and the Gamma to 0.86.

If you are going to resize, it's best to do that first and then add the text.
Text doesn't always look right when resized. I resized mine to 500X375 and used size 48 for the text,
then did the steps as above from the step of applying material to Brightness and Contrast.
Since the wide border makes that one larger, it resized to 500X393.

Watermark and save as a jpg. Don't forget to optimize. I usually optimize at about 70-80.
Web>Image Optimizer>Make sure jpg is selected and move the slider to the spot you want. |
l hope you had fun!

Webpage Design Information
This webpage background was
made in PhotoImpact with a tutorial by Deb DeHaven
Sadly, she passed away but her tutorials just came back online, thanks
to PIRCNet.
You can find the tutorial
here.
The font I used for the gel text not on buttons and on the Email button
Aristocrat SF.
The font I used for the text on the buttons (except for Email) is
BrockScript
The font I used for "Translated from Marian's PSP-Lessen" is
Arnold Boecklin
The font I used for the "Lost Thoughts" tutorial header is
ElegeionScript.
Click on the font name to download the font.
I use PhotoImpact to make all of my headers due to the amazing
3D text it has and the wonderful presets available free online
Most of the presets I use are either the ones that come with PhotoImpact, usually
the Gel ones,
or from Deb's PI Tutorials and More (see below) or
Carol Oyl's site
This is the address to Deb's old pages
http://www.fortunecity.com/skyscraper/millenit/1716/pitutorials/objects/presets/presets1.html
I can't find any links
to her new pages but the presets are still on this page for download.

Presets, take a look at my
Great Beginnings
