For this tutorial you will need:
ULead PhotoImpact, Adobe Photoshop,
Adobe Photoshop Elements, or
Jasc Paint Shop Pro
This tutorial will work in any of these programs.
Filters and Materials needed
Simple filters - Quick Tile and Pizza Slice; DSBFlux>Spiderweb
My plugin windows may look different from yours as I use Filters
Unlimited 2 to manage my plugins
I am assuming you know the basics of your graphics program and where
the tools can be located.
Some abbreviations I used: PSP is Paint Shop Pro, PI is
PhotoImpact, PS is Photoshop, and PSE is Photoshop Elements. |
|
Let's get started! It's a long one so get a cup of coffee. LOL
But it's easy! |
1. Open canvas
1280X300
2. Fill w color of choice (make it light, strip will be dark)
I used a pale pink for mine |
3. Go to Effects>DSB
Flux>Spiderweb with these settings 180-100-50

It should look like this now
 |
4.
Effects>Simple>Pizza slice mirror
 |
5. Select right half
of strip where you see the obvious vertical line
6. Go to Effects>Simple>QuickTile
7. Leave selected and copy
after selection and quick tile
 |
8. Create new canvas
1280X300
9. In PSP, paste as new layer, in PI paste as
object, and in PS and PSE, paste
 |
10. In PSP, PS and
PSE, In layer palette-right click on layer, duplicate; in
PI, Edit>Copy
11. PSP: Image>Mirror
PI transform tool, flip horizontal
PS: Edit>Transform>Flip Horizontal
PSE: Image>Rotate>Flip Horizontal
 |
12. PSP: Make
sure it reaches top, bottom and right margins, if not use the
raster deform tool to stretch it out to meet margins, or
alternately, you can select it, then crop, then resize, uncheck
keep aspect ratio, back to 1280X300
PI: select both objects, Edit>Crop, then resize back to
1280X300
PS: once in position, as far to the right and top as it
can go, turn off background layer and with the top layer
selected, go to Image>Trim and leave checked bottom and left,
leave the default transparent pixels selected and ok. Now resize
the canvas back to 1280X300

PSE: if you need to stretch out the top and bottom, go to
Image>Resize>Scale and pull up and down on the canvas a bit.
Merge all |
13. Pick a med to
dark color from the left side of the original strip.
PSP: Right click in layer palette and Create new raster
layer, fill with the color you picked
Turn opacity down to about 75
PI, go to Edit>Fill>Color and fill this strip at about
25% transparency with the color you picked
PS: Go to Layer>New Fill Layer>Solid Color, and select
the color you picked for it.
In layer palette, turn the fill percentage down to about 45%.

In PSP, PS and PSE: Turn off background layer in the
layer palette
(click on eye and it will go away, see the red x over the eye in
the screenshot below).
This step is not necessary for PI.

PSP: right click in layer palette and merge visible
PS and PSE: Layer>Merge Visible. Turn bg layer back on. |
14. Back to original
strip, select left of strip, to about the 340 mark
In PSP and PI: Edit>Copy, In PS and PSE,
Select>All, Edit>Copy
PSP: paste as new layer into new strip, move to the left
of the strip so it meets the top, bottom and left margins, merge
all
PI: as above but paste as object and move to the left
margin
PS and PSE: Edit>Paste, move to left side

 |
15. Check if it's
seamless
PSP: create new canvas 1280X800, pick pattern in the
material palette, then find the strip you just made.
Flood fill new canvas with this strip and you can see if it's
seamless or not.
If not, Select all>Modify selection, contract by 2 pixels and
crop. Check it in the larger canvas again till you get it
seamless.
PI: Go to File>Preview in Browser>As Tiled Background. It will open a
new browser window where you can see if it's seamless.
If not, go to Selection>All, Selection>Expand/Shrink, shrink by
2 pixels, box shape,
click on the selection tool and in the toolbar, click on crop.
Now check it again and repeat if necessary.
PS and PSE: with your strip selected, go to Edit>Define
Pattern, and give it a name. Open new canvas 1280X800.
Go to Edit>Fill>Pattern and pick your strip pattern. You can now
see if it's seamless.
If it's not, select with the selection tool about 2 pixels
inside the borders top and bottom and crop out. Now check again.

PS and PSE were the only programs that I actually didn't have to
modify the selection, it was seamless already,
possibly because it snaps to the edges and so you don't miss any
in the selection.
(You can get rid of all of the extra patterns when you're done
by going to Edit>Fill>Pattern
and right clicking on the patterns you don't want and clicking
on delete pattern). |
16 Select vertical
strip from the 300 to 340 marks right to bottom of strip
PSP: New raster layer, fill the bar with the same color
you muted the strip with
PI: right click on the selection and convert to object,
right click again
and convert object type from text/image to path
PS and PSE: select a long rectangle as above, go to
Layer>New Fill Layer
and pick the color that you muted the background with. Leave it
selected.

 |
17. Buttonize and/or
inner bevel
PSP: Buttonize with these settings-10-10-50-white,
transparent
Inner bevel: bevel 2, 8-40-200-315-50-30-color white

PI: Easy Palette, Material Attribute gallery, Bevel. You
can pick B03 or B04 for a rounded edge,
or you can experiment. I used B40 for a unique double edge. See
screenshot below of the butterfly one.
PS: go to Layer>Layer Style>Bevel and Emboss and set it
as shown in screenshot.
Inner Bevel, smooth, depth 81, size 8, soften 0, leave same
gloss contour, Altitude change to 50. rest left at default.

PSE: in styles and effects palette, double click on the
Simple Inner preset.
Now go to Layer>Layer Style>Style Settings and change the Bevel
size to 8. |
18. Stretch bars
PSP: Use the raster deform tool to stretch out top and
bottom slightly to make it seamless, get rid of the top and
bottom bevels,
then duplicate layer, move the new bar slightly to the right and
in the layer palette, pull under the other bar.
PI: Right click and duplicate, move slightly to the
right, then right click and Arrange>Send backward.
Pull it under the top one till it looks right. Select both bars
and right click, merge as single object.
Click on the raster deform tool and grab the arrows and stretch
it out slightly to the top and bottom
to get rid of the top and bottom bevels and make the bars
seamless.
PS and PSE: with the bar layer still selected, to to
Edit>Transform>Scale (IN PSE it's Image>Resize>Scale)
and stretch the top and bottom up and out of the canvas to
smooth out the top and bottom bevels and make it seamless.
Hit enter to finalize the scale transform. Now right click on
layer palette and duplicate layer.
Move the new bar slightly to the right of the old one and then
in the layer palette
drag the top bar to under the old one and move it into position
as shown.

 |
19. Check if seamless
again
PSP, PS and PSE: Use the method, outlined above in step 15,
of filling larger canvas with this pattern to make sure it's
seamless,
if not, again use the raster deform tool to pull up and down
slightly, then check again
PI: check the seamless quality by tiling in browser
window as above, if needed,
again pull the top and bottom of the bars to make them seamless.
Merge all |
20. Apply tube,
object or psd file
PSP: Open your tube, copy, paste as new layer onto strip,
position on the left border where it looks nice.
If you have a very bright tube, it may look nice if you play
with the blend options, such as overlay or soft light.
PI: open tube, psd file or object, resize if necessary to
the height of about 280 pixels.
Paste as object, position it in the left border where it looks
nice.
PS and PSE: open tube or psd file, Select>All, Edit>Copy,
go to strip canvas and Edit>Paste.
Move it to where you want it.
