To Set Wallpaper This is the method for Windows XP which is what I currently use. To set your newly saved wallpaper as your desktop wallpaper, right-click on desktop and click on properties. Click on the desktop tab, click on the browse button and browse to where you have saved the wallpaper. Choose it and choose centered, tiled or stretched (use Centered for my wallpaper). Click apply and ok, you have the wallpaper set. This method may work for Vista and Windows 7, I don't know I don't have it. But the method below does work for those 2 operating systems, from what my research tells me. Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Personalization > Desktop Background, and click the 'browse' button, then browse to the actual image In Windows XP this works for png files as well. I understand in Vista and Windows 7 it doesn't. If it doesn't than look at my instructions for using IrfanView below. ~*.:*:.*~.:*:.*~.:*:.*~.:*:.*~.:*:.*~.:*:.*~.:*:.*~ If you just right click on a picture on your computer or on the internet and click on "Set as Wallpaper" this in many cases will change it to a lower quality jpg background with lots of what it is called Artifacts, which means ugly streaks in your wallpaper, especially in the reds. I use a free program called IrfanView to set a picture as wallpaper and this means you can pick png files as well, not matter what operating system you use. ~*.:*:.*~.:*:.*~.:*:.*~.:*:.*~.:*:.*~.:*:.*~.:*:.*~ Using IrfanView to Set your Wallpaper A free program I use is IrfanView, which is also great for very quick viewing of pictures and some touchup work on pictures. It even allows the use of Photoshop plugins. A great little program. ~*.:*:.*~.:*:.*~.:*:.*~.:*:.*~.:*:.*~.:*:.*~.:*:.*~ Cycling Your Wallpaper with a Wallpaper Cycler To cycle my wallpaper, I prefer a free program called Webshots Go to the bottom of the page to the small grey links section and under Memberships, click on "free screensaver/organizer" There are other free programs available to use for cycling your wallpaper, but this is the only one I have used. There is one called BioniX Wallpaper that looks pretty good, but I've never used it. It supports bmp, gif, png, jpg, jpeg, emf, wmf file formats. If I was still using a wallpaper cycler, I would certainly give this one a try. Currently I just pick a wallpaper and set it with IrfanView and just change it once in awhile. ~*.:*:.*~.:*:.*~.:*:.*~.:*:.*~.:*:.*~.:*:.*~.:*:.*~ Using Iconoid to Format Icons and Save Their Positions I use a free program called Iconoid on my laptop with the wide screen, this program will automatically color the desktop to match the wallpaper, which really helps if you use a wallpaper changer to regularly change the desktop wallpaper. You can pick transparent for your icon backgrounds (behind the text) or you can pick any color you like or you can pick for Iconoid to pick a color that matches your desktop. It also hides your desktop icons after a few seconds of no mouse activity on the desktop and instantly brings them back again when you move your mouse on the desktop. Another great thing it does is saves your icon positions. If you have a lot of icons, like I do, this can be a lifesaver. Sometimes when your computer messes up and you reboot all of your icons are reset into alphabetical lines along the left. If you've saved them with Iconoid (right click on the icon in the system tray and click on Save Icon Positions), right click on the icon in the system tray and click on Restore Icon Positions and they will be back the way you like them. |

Webpage Design Information This webpage background was made in PhotoImpact with a tutorial by Deb DeHaven. Sadly, she passed away and her site is gone. I use PhotoImpact to make all of my headers and font previews due to the amazing 3D text it has and the wonderful presets available free online The font I used in the lace headers is BrockScript. All of the gel text on this page was made with the font Paquet Cadeaux (Click on the font name to download) Most of the presets I use are either the ones that come with PhotoImpact, usually the Gel ones, or from Deb's PI Tutorials and More (see below) or Carol Oyl's site This is the address to Deb's Tutorials and More old pages http://www.fortunecity.com/skyscraper/millenit/1716/pitutorials/objects/presets/presets1.html I can't find any links to her new pages but the presets are still on this page for download. For more sites to find PI Presets, take a look at my Great Beginnings page. Back to top |
